Step-by-step bouldering

Let's start

Bouldering at Block013 is accessible. You don't need to know how to belay, and no certification is required. Report to the reception desk, optionally rent climbing shoes, and we'll give you a brief explanation of the basic rules, safety, and how to start a route.

Independent bouldering is permitted from the age of 12. Younger climbers are also welcome, but our youth policy applies. Children aged 8 and over may boulder with parental supervision, with a maximum of two children per parent or guardian. Additional conditions and specific off-peak hours apply to children aged 6 and 7.

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is done on small rock formations or artificial rock walls, known as boulders. It is typically done without the use of ropes or harnesses, with the climber protected by a crash pad.

Bouldering is climbing without ropes or a harness, on short routes of about 3 to 4.5 metres high. Thick crash mats lie beneath the walls. This allows you to start immediately, without a climbing partner or safety equipment.

Every boulder is a small puzzle. You use strength, balance, technique and, above all, your head to climb up using the grips. You don't need to be strong or experienced to start: there are routes for beginners and for advanced climbers alike. Block013 describes bouldering itself as climbing in its purest form: sporty, social and quite addictive.

What can you expect?

At Block013 you'll find a varied bouldering gym in Tilburg with routes for every level. Are you new? We'll get you started with a short explanation, a sample boulder, and practical tips. After that, you can try routes at your own pace.

Start with the easier boulders, watch how others move, and take enough rest in between. You don’t have to reach the top straight away. Bouldering is all about trying, falling, trying again, and improving step by step.

After climbing, you can hang out in the lounge or at the bar. Block013 isn't just about sport, but also about the casual atmosphere, music, team, and community.

Do I need experience?

No. You can start without any prior experience. During your first visit, you'll receive an explanation of the sport and the most important safety rules. After that, you can get started on your own.

Would you like to get better at climbing after your first session? Then you can join Block Beginners. This training consists of 3 sessions, once a week, in a group of at least 6 and a maximum of 8 participants. No entry-level experience is required.

There are also separate training options for personal training, youth training, and advanced climbers.

Is it safe?

Bouldering is an accessible form of indoor climbing. You climb without ropes, but on thick crash mats. The walls are about 3 to 4.5 metres high.

As with any sport, there are risks involved. Therefore, on your first visit, you will be given an explanation on how to fall safely, how to pay attention, and how to be considerate of other climbers. The most important rule is: never walk underneath someone who is climbing, and keep the mat clear.
